Social communication therapy

Social skills, in the simplest form, means being able to communicate effectively with other people. They are the skills we use to interact with others and to illustrate that we are socially competent and have awareness of others around us and can also communicate effectively. Relationships and success are vital for a good quality of life, and both are affected by our social skills.

Those with poor social skills often find it difficult to form friendships and feel isolated and rejected by their peer group. Research has found that social competence is a critical variable in predicting success in future life.

Individuals who have a diagnosis such as Development Language Disorder, Speech Sound Disorder or a language delay are at risk of low self esteem.  Having low self esteem can have a negative impact when trying to initiate and maintain friendships.  However, not everyone who struggles with social skills has a diagnosis.

Children with social anxiety may also find it challenging to engage in social situations due to excessive fear of judgment or embarrassment. Support can help them manage their anxiety and build more comfortable social connections.

Social skills are valuable for everyone, regardless of their background. Anyone who needs to enhance their communication, ability to form friendships, conflict resolution, and active listening skills can benefit from support.
